The Ampeg A-2 Compressor is a pedal-format compressor with a distinctive control layout that pairs a Comp knob for setting the amount of compression with an Output knob for recovering level. As the Comp knob is increased, the pedal applies more gain reduction, tightening the dynamic range of the input signal; the Output control then compensates for the resulting volume drop, allowing the compressed signal to match or exceed the bypassed level. A two-position switch selects between two compression characteristics, altering how the pedal responds to picking dynamics—one setting provides a more transparent, subtle squash while the other yields a more pronounced, sustained effect.
